Who Are We?
ID Environmental Consultants is a group of ecologists, farmers and agricultural consultants who take a multidisciplinary approach to tackling ecological and agricultural problems. We use a mixture of traditional science and land management techniques along with modern surveying and mapping technologies to understand the issues at hand. We provide clear, concise reporting, maps and plans to our clients. We aim to provide the best possible outcomes for our clients and the environment.
ID Environmental Consultants was founded by Ian Douglas, a native of Co. Meath, who grew up working on his family’s beef and sheep farm. Ian holds a BSc in Environmental Management from DIT and a MSc in Agriculture and Environmental Science from Newcastle University. Ian started his career as a Soil and Agricultural Scientist, working in the UK and Australia. While in Australia he learned the importance of soil biology, soil health and regenerative agriculture. Working in an environmentally constrained country he learnt the importance of building resilient ecological and agricultural systems that can withstand extremes of climate.
In Ireland, Ian has been working as an Ecologist with Flynn Furney Environmental Consultants, where he retains an Associate Directorship position. Ian specialises in Appropriate Assessment, GIS, Nature Trail Design, Ecological Impact Assessment, Habitat Creation and Agro-ecology. Ian has worked on projects including large wind farms and road developments to small local projects with community groups, farmers and landowners.

We aim to bring clarity to complexity and help our clients work efficiently within our National and European environmental legislation. We bring a multidisciplinary approach to assessing, restoring and building natural systems.

ID Environmental Consultants bring together open minded and experienced experts in ecology, agriculture, remote sensing, landscape architecture and rewilding. We work with experts from around Ireland and abroad. Depending on the nature and scale of your project, we can create a team from across a number of businesses that best suits your needs.
What We Believe In
The challenges we face around climate change, biodiversity loss and agricultural sustainability are monumental. We must conserve and enhance our remaining semi-natural areas while regenerating our degraded and intensively managed areas and systems. ID Environmental Consultants was created to bring together people who recognise these challenges and understand what these solutions mean on the ground.

Rewilding is a progressive approach to land management and conservation. In essence, it’s about restoring nature’s capacity to create healthier, more resilient ecosystems that support a rich abundance of diversity.

What is Regenerative Agriculture?
Regenerative agriculture covers a range of farming practises that aim to restore, diversify and enhance farm biological systems and farm businesses. Regenerative agriculture broadly aims to improve soil health, increasing biodiversity on farm and locally, enhance carbon sequestration, promote better livestock welfare and to take a systems wide approach to farm management.
Regenerative farming is always aiming to build natural capital, to protect soils and to diversify farming systems and income streams. One of the biggest potential benefits of regenerative agriculture is its ability to help combat climate change and build resilience to its impacts. Farms with healthy soils and a diversity within the farm business are those better able to withstand the impacts of extreme weather events and market volatility.
