Biodiversity Net Gain

Biodiversity Enhancement (BE)

Biodiversity Enhancement (BE) is about designing projects that leave biodiversity in a better state than before.  This is accomplished by avoiding impacts on high-value ecological features and enhancing the value of existing features, and introducing new ecological elements. Projects must go beyond simply mitigating damage to considering how to actively create or restore habitat.

Biodiversity Net Gain

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is an approach to assessing biodiversity uplift or improvements. This is calculated using a metric that compares habitats, and/or fauna species abundance, before and after a project. There is currently no nationally recognised method for assessing BNG in the Republic of Ireland.

Assess Your Project’s Impact

Increasingly businesses and state bodies are looking to quantify their impacts on the environment as part of their ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) accounting. Biodiversity Net Gain allows organisations to assess the impacts of their projects and to invest in actions seeking to conserve and restore nature, as part of their biodiversity enhancement plan.

How We Help Organisations

IDEC can help organisations looking to undertake biodiversity; enhancement, net gain and uplift projects for ESG accounting, as part of planning applications or as part of landscape-scale habitat enhancement projects like catchment management projects or rewilding schemes.

IDEC uses the Wallacea Trust methodology for assessing BNG. This methodology quantifies expected biodiversity benefits for projects by assessing species, habitat and other indicators of ecosystem health including soils and water quality. The results are peer-reviewed and independently verified and can be used to generate biodiversity credits. Verified credits can be traded, allowing organisations to compensate for unavoidable biodiversity loss elsewhere, create diverse and socially responsible revenue or be used for ESG accounting and insetting.

IDEC is delighted to be able to help organisations looking to undertake biodiversity; enhancement, net gain, and uplift projects for ESG accounting, planning applications or as part of landscape-scale habitat enhancement projects including catchment management projects or rewilding schemes.  Our strategies align with the goals outlined in Ireland’s National Biodiversity Action Plan.
